How To Tell if Your Child Has an Airway Issue

Sleeping child

As a parent, it’s easy to recognize when your child has a runny nose or a cough, but some problems aren’t always that obvious. In many cases, children develop airway issues gradually, and the signs can be mistaken for “normal” childhood habits or behaviors.

Snoring, restless sleep, mouth breathing, or difficulty focusing during the day may indicate an airway that’s not functioning as well as it should. Since healthy breathing and good sleep play an important role in a child’s growth and development, recognizing these signs early can make a meaningful difference.

Common Signs Your Child May Have an Airway Issue

While every child is different, many children with airway concerns share similar symptoms. If you notice several of these signs, it may be worth scheduling an evaluation with an orthodontist or primary care physician.

Frequent Mouth Breathing

Humans are designed to breathe through their noses most of the time. If your child regularly breathes through their mouth during the day or while sleeping, it may indicate that something is restricting normal nasal breathing. Over time, chronic mouth breathing can influence jaw development, facial growth, and even the alignment of the teeth.

Loud Snoring or Noisy Breathing During Sleep

Occasional snoring, especially if your child has a physical illness, isn’t usually a concern. However, regular snoring, gasping, snorting, or noisy breathing while sleeping may suggest that your child’s airway is partially blocked. These sounds can be a sign that your child isn’t getting the restful, uninterrupted sleep their growing body needs.

Restless Sleep

Does your child constantly toss and turn? Do they kick off their blankets, wake frequently, or sleep in unusual positions with their head tilted back? Children with airway issues often move throughout the night as their bodies search for a position that makes breathing easier.

Daytime Fatigue

Even if your child spends plenty of time in bed, poor-quality sleep can leave them feeling exhausted during the day. Signs of daytime fatigue may include:

  • Difficulty waking up in the morning
  • Falling asleep in the car, even on the way to exciting events
  • Low energy throughout the day or at school
  • Frequent irritability or meltdowns

Since children can’t always recognize that they’re tired, these symptoms can easily go unnoticed or be mistaken for other causes.

Difficulty Paying Attention

Sleep-disordered breathing causes a lack of sleep, which sometimes affects concentration, memory, and emotional regulation during the day. Some children with airway issues may appear inattentive, impulsive, or hyperactive simply because they aren’t getting restorative sleep each night. If your child’s teachers, nanny, or family members have noticed these symptoms, it’s worth investigating further.

Bedwetting Beyond the Typical Age

Persistent bedwetting (enuresis) can have many causes, but research has shown that disrupted sleep from airway problems may contribute to bedwetting for some children. While bedwetting alone doesn’t indicate an airway issue, it may be worth mentioning if it occurs alongside other symptoms.

Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Persistent dark circles beneath the eyes can be associated with chronic nasal congestion and airway obstruction. Combined with mouth breathing or restless sleep, they may provide another clue that your child’s breathing should be evaluated.

When Should You Schedule a Pediatric Sleep Apnea Evaluation?

If your child regularly experiences several of these symptoms, it’s worth bringing them to the attention of a healthcare professional.

At Hidden Valley Orthodontics, Dr. Christy Fortney recommends children receive their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. This isn’t because every child needs braces or Invisalign®, but because it’s the ideal time to monitor growth and identify concerns early. Our HVO Kids Club allows us to observe development over time and recommend treatment only when it’s truly beneficial.

We always take a thoughtful and holistic approach to patient care, and this extends to evaluating signs that may indicate airway concerns.
