What Are Braces and How Do They Work?

Braces are orthodontic appliances that help correct problems with your teeth by placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction. Braces can correct crowding, crooked teeth, teeth that are out of alignment, and much more. How? Using physics!

Brackets are placed directly on teeth using a bonding agent, then arch wires are threaded through the brackets. Our orthodontists control the tension and tightness of these wires, making sure each individual tooth moves in the desired direction. At each follow-up visit, we will make minor adjustments, continuing to control the movement and ensuring your treatment is on track.

Benefits of Braces Treatment

Braces can correct misaligned teeth, including overbite and underbite problems, but they do much more than that! Here are some of the ways dental braces can help your overall quality of life:

Types of Braces Offered at Hidden Valley Orthodontics

Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic, and they can be removable or secured to your teeth for the duration of treatment. Our orthodontists may recommend specific types of braces depending on your needs and your lifestyle. At Hidden Valley Orthodontics, we offer:

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces used today, but these aren’t the clunky braces you might remember from childhood. We use state-of-the-art Forestadent braces, which are low profile, efficient, and comfortable. Choose from tons of colored elastics to change up your look and  show off your style with a colorful smile!

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces, except the brackets are made of a clear ceramic material. They are a great option for teenage and adult patients who may have aesthetic concerns because they are less noticeable on your teeth.

However, ceramic braces require a bit more attention when it comes to oral hygiene, they can be more fragile than metal braces, and can become discolored if you eat certain foods or smoke. We’ll work with you closely to determine if they might be a good fit for your needs and lifestyle!

The Power of Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign aligners are customized clear plastic trays that fit onto your teeth. They use pressure to gently move and straighten your teeth, and they are virtually invisible. Invisalign aligners are also removable, so you can take them out to eat, drink, brush and floss, but in order to get the best results it’s important to wear them at least 20-22 hours a day.

Hidden Valley Orthodontics is a Diamond Invisalign treatment provider. We have successfully treated more than 1,300 cases. We go above and beyond with this technology, often working with cases that other orthodontists said couldn’t be treated with Invisalign.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Braces?

Any child age 7 and up should be monitored by an orthodontist.  Not treated, but monitored for the growth and development of their mouth and jaws.  Early monitoring helps create a road map for successful treatment, if treatment ends up being needed.  The best time for kids to get braces is usually between 10 and 14 years old, because their mouth and jaw are in the growth phase, and teeth are still erupting. Treatment at this stage of development makes it possible to address orthodontic issues as they arise and possibly avoid unnecessary, lengthy treatment.  If you find yourself past this stage of life and looking to update your smile, don’t be disheartened,  braces are very effective for older teenagers and adults as well.

Braces For Adults

You’re never too old for orthodontic treatment! Adults often have the same orthodontic issues as children and teens. We also offer Invisalign aligners and clear ceramic braces, which are perfect for adults who may worry about the look of traditional braces

Braces For Teens

Teens are great candidates for braces, and we’re happy to help them achieve straight, beautiful, healthy smiles. We know how full teens’ schedules can get, and we’re happy to work with them to provide a personalized orthodontic solution that fits their individual needs, both dental and schedule related.
