As parents, we all want the best for our children. That includes healthy teeth and a pleasing smile. At Hidden Valley Orthodontics, we suggest starting with regular dental care. The American Dental Association recommends that a child visit the dentist by his or her first birthday, while baby (primary) teeth are emerging. Your dentist can alert you to any concerns about how the teeth and jaws are developing.
Dr. Fortney, a mother of two young boys, is well aware that as parents, we pay very close attention to our children as they grow and develop. There are many times that parents are the first to recognize a problem with the alignment of teeth and jaws. They may not understand exactly what may be wrong but something just does not look right. That is where a trusted Orthodontist like Dr. Fortney can be invaluable!
Dr. Fortney and Hidden Valley Orthodontics introduced their 7&UP program last year to bring attention to this very important stage of development. To have a healthy smile that’s good for life, our child needs teeth and jaws that are properly aligned. Dr. Fortney recommends that children get a check-up with an orthodontist at the first recognition of the existence of an orthodontic problem, but about the age of 7 is ideal.
At this appointment Dr. Fortney will look at:
- Position of baby teeth and permanent teeth
- Teeth at risk for injury or decay due to protrusion or over-crowding
- Dental overcrowding or spacing which could hinder or affect permanent tooth development
- Obstructive breathing – children should not be snoring at this age
Catching potential issues early can be crucial. Some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they’re found early. A check-up about the age of 7 gives Dr. Fortney the opportunity to recommend the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time. If early treatment is in order, Dr. Fortney may be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
Here at Hidden Valley Orthodontics we operate under the philosophy that everyone is different and therefore has different needs. Not every child will need braces and you may not choose to see Dr. Fortney, but we at Hidden Valley Orthodontics highly suggest that if you have any orthodontic concerns, you take the time to seek out an Orthodontic specialist you trust!
